Acupuncture is an ancient healing art developed by the Chinese over 3000 years ago. Through the years it has been very successful in helping patients with many different types of health ailments. This type of healing balances the energy pathways in your body, promotes tissue healing, increased blood flow, better health, and can make dramatic differences in pain.
The body has 12 main energy pathways called Meridians (we could liken each one of these to a freeway) and each of these pathways has numerous points called acupuncture points (we could liken these to on ramps and off ramps connecting to the freeway). The acupuncture needles are used to access the energy flow in the meridians and depending on the techniques used, these points can increase or decrease the energy flow in the meridians thereby balancing the overall energy flow of the body.
Acupuncture as a healing art has drastically increased in popularity over the last decade and people have a lot of questions about it. Please do not hesitate to ask questions so that you can find out more. Does acupuncture hurt?
The short answer is, generally, no. Most people say they sometimes feel nothing and other times you may feel “small pinching sensations” as the needle penetrates the skin, but this soon subsides. We use very gentle, careful techniques and our acupuncture needles are factory sterilized and disposed of after each use. Treatments can range from 15-30 minutes depending upon the condition and specific techniques we may use for your condition.
How many treatments does it take?
That question is variable depending on the condition, the length of time you have had the problem, and how quickly your body responds. Generally, most people feel major changes within as few as 3-4 or as many as 6-8 treatments.
Is acupuncture covered by my insurance?
Because of the increased acceptance and popularity of acupuncture, more and more insurance companies are beginning to cover acupuncture treatments. To find out for sure, you can check with your insurance provider or contact our office and we will be happy to help you find out the coverage your insurance may have for acupuncture. Even if acupuncture is not covered by your insurance plan, it is affordable and we would be happy to make financial arrangements with you so that you can receive the care you need.
